Video Transcript: How creative homeowners restored their home—on a budget

On screen:

Soft music playing, video opens on the staircase of a craftsman house. The staircase runs along an elaborate bookshelf full of books and knick knacks.

Allison:

I wanted a Craftsman house and he wanted a curio shop.

On screen:

Camera pans across a wall of more books and knick knacks.

Allison:

And so we drove around LA looking at different Craftsman houses and taking pictures and we kind of drew what we wanted.

On screen:

As Allison speaks, she and Tom sit in an interview setting in front of the staircase.

Allison:

And that was our inspiration.

On screen:

The exterior of the house is on screen. The camera moves in toward the house as the Chase logo comes up.

Tom:

What attracted us to the house was it was almost all original, built in 1950.

On screen:

Tom:

They even had their kids footprints still in the backyard.

Allison:

Yeah, we saved the footprints.

Tom:

So they're little tiny from 1958 or something like that.

On screen:

The camera pans across the wall of a bedroom, the name “Gordon” is spelled by hanging letters on the wall.

Allison:

So then we thought, well now we have to turn it into a house that we actually want to live in.

On screen:

Allison, Tom, and their son walk up the staircase.

Tom:

Our first phase of construction was doing a second story. We bought all the drywall when we got married.

On screen:

Tom:

We asked only for gift cards.

On screen:

Camera moves back through a hallway in the home. The bookshelf can be seen at the end of the hallway.

Tom:

When we finished the second story, more or less, and we could move our stuff upstairs...

On screen:

The camera moves in toward the bathroom. The bathroom is white with a green wall.

Tom:

--we're like, OK, let's tackle the downstairs, tackle the kitchen.

On screen:

Allison and Tom in their interview setting.

Tom:

The big budget stuff was bought and then the budget that we had set aside was not enough to finish the house.

On screen:

Allison and her son play with blocks on the floor.

Tom:

And we kind of just decided that in lieu of panicking, that we would just try to work our way through it and do what best we can.

On screen:

Allison and her son walk barefoot along a hallway with a tile floor.

Tom:

The idea that we're going to have someone put up our siding, we're going to have a tile guy...

On screen:

Allison and Tom in their interview setting.

Tom:

--and it went from that to us spending evenings looking at books and online. I mean, that's where I think the true resourcefulness comes from.

On screen:

Tom tinkers with a model of a construction crane at his workbench.

Allison:

So we'd drive around to different salvage places or recycling centers and look for materials that maybe we could use...

On screen:

Allison and Tom in their interview setting.

Allison:

--that we could afford and then figure out how to piece it all together.

On screen:

Tom and his son sit at the workbench together and work on the model crane. They plug a lightbulb in where a wrecking ball would go. Tom's son turns a switch and the lightbulb turns on.

Son:

How do you make that again?

Tom:

Well, we use the old cord here. And we're going to feed it through, so it looks like it has an old wrecking ball or something on it. And it sits like that.

On screen:

The camera moves in on the laundry room.

Tom:

We failed at so many things that we built. I didn't know you have to build your cabinets shorter than your ceiling...

On screen:

Allison and Tom in their interview setting.

Tom:

--because I didn't think about how you'd lift them up into a room and stuff like that. It's just not-- but who cares. I mean, fail, and go back and do it again.

On screen:

Allison and Tom make lemonade with their son in the kitchen. The son licks a lemon.

Tom:

Everything that we've accomplished in our lives, having a kid, raising him now to five, all the fun that we've had here...

On screen:

Allison and Tom in their interview setting.

Tom:

--it all comes in this little 30 by 40 box.

On screen:

On the screen is a refrigerator with a child's drawings stuck onto it with magnets.

Allison:

I think one of the great things that came out of our house...

On screen:

Allison:

--is that it led us to live more passionate lives.

On screen:

The camera pans across some framed pictures sitting on top of a table.

Allison:

We built our house so that we could start a family.

On screen:

The boy smiling while making lemonade.

Allison:

It made it exciting to come home and see each other.

On screen:

Allison and Tom tuck their son in for bed. The wrecking ball lamp sits in the corner of the room.

Allison:

And everything we put in here has a story.
